The smart marque has a very interesting history. The concept was first brought forward in the early '90s by the CEO of Swatch watches Nicolas Hayek. Hayek landed a deal with Daimler Benz, the makers of Mercedes Benz in 1994 and the first smart car was launched in 1998. In 2019 the Smart marque became a joint venture, established by Mercedez Benz and Zhejiang Geely Holding Group.
